Network Rail's Newtown Abbott depot upgraded
Source: Rail Technology Magazine Dec/Jan 2007
The existing access road to Network Rail’s Depot at Newton Abbott has been upgraded using an environmental solution. Rather than resorting to macadam paving the Grasscrete system was instead selected to provide a self-draining and aesthetically acceptable alternative.
The 260m long grassed track was installed to service the compound as well as providing a turning area. With potential for heavy deliveries, the 150mm thick Grasscrete GC2sc system was specified. This cast in place reinforced concrete structure is capable of accepting 40 tonne loads.
Construction was undertaken by Grass Concrete Limited’s own contracts division in a direct contract with Network Rail.
In addition to its unique Grasscrete paving system, Grass Concrete Limited is also able to provide environmental retaining walls from its Betoconcept range. This features plantable structures which have the added benefit of being certified noise barriers.
Grass Concrete provide warranted designs for the walls and can offer either supply only or supply and lay.
