Siemens awarded contract for Heathrow rail link software upgrade
Siemens will provide the software platform central to upgrading the Heathrow rail Tunnel Control System (TCS) under a new contract announced today.
In partnership with Firstco, Siemens will install the WinCC OA SCADA, replacing the current TCS, which dates back to 2013. The whole project is expected to take 18 months.
The TCS controls systems including tunnel lighting, tunnel smoke control and ventilation, traction power, lifts, escalators, CCTV, fire alarm, public address, train information displays, telephones and tunnel radio.
Daniel Smalley, product manager for SCADA, said: “We are delighted to commence work with our solution partner Firstco on this exciting upgrade project for Heathrow.
“Our solution is proven to offer a scalable, innovative and open system for maximum transparency and performance. We’re looking forward to playing a leading role in building the capacity and efficiency of this important rail link.”
Firstco has had a commercial relationship with Heathrow for over 20 years. Siemens and Firstco have already installed WinCC OA software for the airport’s fire alarm management system.
Mike Gray, director of Firstco, said upgrading the system would “keep the travelling public and employees safe, and the day-to-day operation of the rail services as efficient as possible”.
Consultancy Greengauge 21 called for Heathrow to become a 'rail hub' following the government's confirmation that the third runway will go ahead.
