White Hart Lane Station - Fereday Pollard Architects

Source RTM Dan 19/ Jan 20

Fereday Pollard Architects are delighted to have completed their commission as lead architects and public realm designers for Taylor Woodrow who have successfully built and handed over the landmark new station at White Hart Lane in August.

Forming a major part of the local authority’s ambitious ‘High Road West’ regeneration masterplan for the area, the new station had to fulfil a number of key local objectives including increased passenger flow to the new Tottenham Hotspur Station, alleviating overcrowding in the area on match days and improved connectivity to the High Road West area.  By locating the new station to the south of the existing station, direct connections to the west were made by bringing the historic railway arches into play.  With the extensive public realm programme outside, the new station became a fully integrated cornerstone of the area masterplan whilst maintaining its part of the wider London Overground network.

Full step free facilities, better wayfinding and more generous circulation was provided in the new station as well as a vastly better passenger experience.  The unique façade took its inspiration from the area’s historic clay pots manufacturing base and helped create the distinctive multi layered building envelope especially at night where the internal lighting arrangements provide a beacon for the traveller.  The internal parts are defined by the treble height volume, the timber slatted ceiling and the bronze and grey panels and structures sitting framing the Victorian existing brick arches.

Technical challenges that needed to be overcome included designing the fragile terracotta pots as durable and maintainable panels with minimal structural support.  The rationalisation of the cable management strategy to reduce visible service routes yet improving ease of installation and maintenance was a key factor in the delivery stages and Taylor Woodrow’s key tender winning theme of forming the underpasses with jack boxes and hand tunnelling rather than constructing a bridge structure was carefully worked through.

Fereday Pollard Architects developed the reference design scheme into a constructible and on budget building design and then through GRIP 4 to 8 stages and closing out all the planning conditions, co-ordinated all design team and specialist sub-contractor inputs and provided the detailed information for Taylor Woodrow to build from.

The successful delivery of White Hart Lane Station adds to the growing list of transport and infrastructure based projects that Fereday Pollard have been instrumentally involved in over the past two decades and which includes our role as lead architects on Abbey Wood Station, Thames Tideway Tunnel and the Lower Thames Crossing.  With our expanding transportation and infrastructure workload in the Midlands, East Anglia and the north, we look forward to opening new offices in Birmingham in 2020.
