Arcadis lands £7m Old Oak Common HS2 station systems design deal

Arcadis Consulting has been awarded a £7m contract to design the rail systems at the new Old Oak Common HS2 station.

The contract encompasses the design services for the railway systems in and around the proposed station and integrate with the design being carried out by HS2’s design consultant.

Old Oak Common station will be built on the site of the Old Oak Common railway depot in north west London, and will provide a link between the Crossrail line and HS2.

As detailed in the procurement description, Arcadis will be responsible for modifying the western mainline track layout to support the new station as well as using its design services for track drainage, signalling power supply systems, and electrification.

The firm will also deliver structural assessments of Scrubs Lane, Mitre, Old Oak Common Lane and Central Line bridges.

The contract is estimated to be worth almost £6,850,000, and the tender and contract also contain options for further design services including detail design.

The designers of the station for the four new HS2 stations were announced in February, while a shortlist of potential builders was invited to tender for two major construction contracts in the same month. The new Old Oak Common depot began operations for the new Elizabeth Line in May.

HS2 says the Old Oak Common HS2 station is due to be ready by 2026, offering a multimodal transport interchange providing easier transitions between a number of other mainline and commuter services, including the Elizabeth Line and the Great Western Main Line.

The station will be around one kilometre in length and 20m below ground, making it the biggest sub-surface station built in the UK. It will be built on an urban brownfield site in London Zone 2, will have eight platforms above ground and over 30% of the depot will run on renewable energy.
