Major northern station upgrade reaches phase two of redevelopment
Plans to improve the Doncaster Railway Station have reached phase two of the redevelopment process.
Work has begun on the plans, developed by Doncaster Council and London Eastern Railway (LNER), to completely revitalise the station and construction of a new glass canopy is already well under way.
The whole scheme should be completed by 2020 and is benefitting £7.5m of Sheffield City Region funding.
When completed, the redevelopment plans will see a new covered walkway to the station, new north and south entrances, and a new station car park and taxi rank.
The existing forecourt at the front of the station will be transformed into a high-quality pedestrian area, making the current area “a focal point and pleasing area in which to arrive into Doncaster.”
The station will open as normal during phase 2 of redevelopment, but the north entrance will close for 12 weeks from late September, followed by the south entrance when phase 3 starts.
Dan Jarvis, mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “It is great to see work start at Doncaster train station to transform it into an attractive and welcoming area for all those visiting, living in and working in our town centre.
“I made a commitment to support Doncaster’s Urban Centre Masterplan projects, and the redevelopment of the train station is a great example of how the town centre is being improved.”
The council-led project is being carried out in partnership with LNER and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, and is one of a number of major town centre projects helping to deliver the Urban Centre Masterplan.
The council say the plans have been specifically designed to open up Doncaster’s town centre to more visitors and businesses.
Tim Hedley-Jones, major projects director at LNER, said: “Doncaster is a busy station so we’re really pleased to be working with the council to improve the experience of those travelling to the area via train.
“Significant progress has already been made and we’re currently on track to complete the canopy in spring 2019.”
