Wolverhampton to get new station as part of £120m redevelopment

Wolverhampton station will be demolished and replaced with a more modern development as part of a £120m investment.

Wolverhampton City Council approved the plans from the Wolverhampton Interchange Partnership for the new station, which will feature a larger passenger concourse, ticket barriers, and an enhanced ticket office in the style of Birmingham New Street.

In addition, there will be better retail and café facilities, an increase in taxi rank provisions and more efficient passenger drop-off and pick-up points.

Balfour Beatty and Neptune Developments are currently building a new station multi-storey car park, which is due to be complete by the end of the year. Work on the station itself will then begin next year.

As part of the developments, a Midland Metro tram extension to Wolverhampton city centre has also been approved by the transport secretary.

Ninder Johal, a board member of Black Country LEP, told local newspaper Express and Star: “Wolverhampton railway station had fallen behind other similar stations around the country. Obviously now with the incoming HS2 the timing for this is superb.

“It will help build on the regeneration of both Wolverhampton and the Black Country, particularly with the Mander Centre and the Civic Hall.

“This means more visitors will come through a much-improved station and rail infrastructure.”
