Work gets underway at Greenfield train station
Changes will be afoot at Greenfield train station next weekend as work begins on a new ticket office and waiting areas on the Manchester bound platform.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) is funding the improvements, which will also include a new disabled toilet.
A temporary ticket office will operate at the front of the station during the project, which starts on Sunday 30 March and is due to be completed in the autumn.
Councillor Jeremy Sutcliffe, GMPTA spokesperson for Oldham, said: “I’m glad to see work about to start on this major overhaul of facilities at Greenfield station.
“The station is extremely well used and in need of modernising and I’m sure these improvements will be of great benefit to passengers.
“It will definitely be a more welcoming environment – hopefully encouraging even more people to travel by train.”
The new ticket office will include seating and be accessible to people with wheelchairs and prams. There will also be two external covered waiting areas on the platform.
A digital CCTV system that can be monitored by ticket office staff will be installed and staff facilities will be improved.
A small number of parking spaces will make way for the temporary ticket office and a work base during the project. Around 80 spaces will still be available nearby at Saddleworth Rangers Rugby Club.
The free car park, which is funded by GMPTA, is staffed during opening hours from 7am to 7.30pm, Monday to Friday.
