Millennial railcard nationwide sale delayed to 2 January

Millennial railcards for 26- to 30-year-olds will go on general sale on 2 January after the launch was delayed to coincide with the annual fare rise in the New Year.

The railcard is being made available digitally only for all 4.5 million Britons nationwide who fall into the age bracket, giving passengers a 30% discount on rail tickets.

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) said in October that the cards would be rolled out before the end of the year, but this has been pushed back to coincide with the 3.1% rise in rail fares announced today, which will come into effect on 2 January.

The new railcard was first launched as a trial in December 2017 when 10,000 cards were made available in East Anglia. A further 10,000 were released nationwide in March this year in a second trial, during which a mad scramble for the popular card ensued, causing the website to crash due to high demand.

The Railcard company explained that it had intended to launch the card by the end of the year, but cited bank holidays as the reason why it had slightly missed the deadline.


In October, the RDG said 26- to 30-year-olds would be able to save £125 on off-peak rail journeys, with railcard also the first to be exclusively digital.

Its managing director, Jacqueline Starr, said: “Britain’s rail companies are excited to announce that the National Rail 26-30 Railcard will be available across the country before the end of the year.

“It means more young people can explore Britain for less using our trains and benefit from saving a third on rail travel, making it cheaper to get out and enjoy the seaside or visit family and friends.”

The railcards will cost £30 and will be available online, this time in unlimited numbers, from the 2 January.
