On the right track
Lighting solutions specialist Holophane Europe has recently developed a range of specifically designed lighting for a wide range of metro applications, as exemplified by the projects the company has D11 completed, explains head of product and market development, David Barnwell.
When tailoring a lighting scheme for a metro application, it is essential to ensure the lighting takes account of the special requirements of the railway environment and those that use it. As well as meeting the visual needs of staff and passengers, metro lighting must also consider factors such as ease of installation, operation and maintenance, energy consumption and potential deterioration in harsh environments.
Holophane’s range of lighting products for metro applications encompasses lighting solutions for platforms, tunnels, train care facilities, public areas, train lines, external access points and staff working areas. These are supported by advanced control options to optimise lighting and energy performance.
The versatility of the Holophane range is exemplified through some of the projects that we have been involved with.
In the station
At King’s Cross Station in London, Holophane designers used 3D solid modelling to optimise the layout of Prismpack high bay luminaires with Superglass reflector systems. Combined with HOLOS2 digital lighting controls the design has enabled 56% energy savings compared to the original design. Prismpack was also used at Edinburgh Waverley station, along with Prismashield, and Parkpack luminaires to provide optimal lighting of walkways. A key element of the project was Prismashield’s ability to give an asymmetric light distribution to minimise light spillage to trackside.
In developing a new lighting system for Victoria Station in London, Holophane worked closely with Network Rail and English Heritage to create a scheme that addresses efficiency, performance and aesthetic requirements, to suit the architecture and space. The solution uses ‘Egg’ style luminaires giving 75% downlight and 25% uplighting of the architectural roof structure.
At Finsbury Park national rail station in north London, Holophane’s Prismashield Elite luminaires are providing energy-efficient continuous lighting that incorporates all cabling and the PA system. Lighting levels have been greatly improved with a significant reduction in energy and maintenance costs.
In the tunnel Several installations for London Underground have used Holophane Metrolux and Widerlite luminaires with LED light sources to optimise energy efficiency and lamp life. These have included upgrading existing fittings with retrofit LED modules.
Specially designed and engineered for rail tunnel applications, Metrolux and Widerlite feature a prismatic glass refractor that ensures even light distribution and minimises shadows while aiding visual adaptation.
In the depot
Holophane High Mast systems and Prismalume luminaires are ensuring suitably high light levels within the Temple Mills Eurostar repair sheds and train line at Orient Way. Prismalume luminaires use a unique prismatic glass reflector that both reflects and refracts light. Holophane designed a lighting system that delivered a high level of flexibility while optimising visual performance and energy efficiency.
Refurbishment of high bay lighting at Network Rail’s Light Maintenance Depot in Bounds Green, London has achieved a 38% reduction in energy consumption compared to the previous lighting. The lighting is linked to presence detectors through a HOLOS2 control system to dim light levels in relation to occupancy. This project also won the ‘Best retrofit lighting’ project of the year at the recent Lux Awards.
In the car park
Holophane Atlanta luminaires at the Victoria Street multi-storey car park serving St. Albans rail station give even light distribution on horizontal and vertical surfaces to avoid the ‘tunnel effect’ often experienced in multi-storey car parks. On the roof, Holophane Aeris luminaires are mounted on 5m columns and use a flat tempered glass to provide full cut-off of light at and above the horizontal plane.
Established for over 100 years, Holophane has built an enviable reputation for expertise, quality and innovation in lighting.
As a member of the Lighting Industry Association, Holophane constantly applies best practice and full compliance with all relevant legislation.
