High speed for half price?
A new report being considered by ministers has found that a high speed rail network could be built for around half the amount which High Speed Two had predicted.
The report found that much of the cost would have come from weaving the network through various city centres and that by taking the network through a different route, missing out some of those city centre stations, the whole project could be delivered far more cheaply.
Transport secretary Philip Hammond said: "It is vital that any new high speed network offers good value for passengers and for taxpayers.
“We need to look carefully at all the options to achieve this, and this report is a welcome contribution to the debate."
