Camden Council opens consultation on HS2 upgrades at Euston

Camden council has today released a plan for the development around and above Euston station in anticipation of works beginning ahead of HS2 going through the area.

In the plans, a set of seven principles are set out as central to developments at the station. A public consultation has also been opened today that gives residents a chance to comment on the principles.

Broadly, the council set out its overarching ambition of “designing Euston as a sustainable place for everyone to enjoy, a new piece of city with a world class transport interchange and a vibrant mix of housing (including genuinely affordable housing), economic uses, open space and cultural facilities which knits into and reconnects existing communities and areas”.

Other principles which have been highlighted as central to the upgrades being made to Euston include using space in an efficient way and ensuring “any development is outward looking in all directions to encourage permeability and to disperse and rebalance activity and economic potential”.

The document also sets out that respecting the history and “character” of the area was essential when drawing up designs, whilst also creating a high-quality facility that would last well into the future.

Finally, boosting the economy, making the station an open space and creating a network of new streets to connect the station to the surrounding area were also emphasised as key principles for the Euston upgrade’s success.

The council’s consultation said: “Euston station is changing, with HS2 Ltd preparing for construction, and Network Rail, Crossrail 2 and Transport for London also thinking about how to design the station.

“A fully redeveloped station would maximise opportunities for new homes, jobs, open space and routes through and around the station.

“We are preparing a plan for development in the Euston station and tracks area with the Greater London Authority and Transport for London, which will both inform, and be informed by, emerging designs for the stations at Euston. 

“The plan will develop the vision set out in the Euston Area Plan, a long-term framework to guide transformational change in the area up until 2031.”

Residents have been invited to respond to the consultation by Monday 3 July 2017.
