Blackpool tram extension comes closer as new terminal building approved

Plans to buy a building to become the terminal for a new Blackpool tram extension have been approved.

Blackpool Council voted in favour of plans to buy the Wilkinson’s building on Talbot Road last night.

The £22m extension, built to improve the transition between rail and tram services, will include a tram stop at Talbot Square and an extended line up Talbot Road from the Promenade.

Cllr Fred Jackson said: “Extending the tramline to the station will make it easier for commuters and tourists to move between the two and will also provide more opportunities to increase our visitor numbers – in turn creating more jobs and boosting the local economy.”

Work on the extension is due to begin in 2018.

Figures released last year show that passenger numbers on Blackpool’s trams are declining.

For the pedantic, "extension" is a bit of a misnomer for the reinstatement of the town end of the Layton tram route, abandoned in 1936! Hopefully it won't be single track & turnouts this time, though----

Be much better to link the tram at Starr Gate onto the Blackpool South Line and run Tram Trains to Kirkham

How many times has the town centre been dug up over & over? And now again, but we have to wait another 2 years! I'm absolutely behind this idea/plan, but come on, why does it have to take soooo long & why haven't we done this earlier? We could have had a modern, mass transit system to be proud of that took u through the heart of the town centre to bring people right to the shops, businesses @ ents venues, further transforming the fortunes of the town, instead we're just making it easier to get to the prom. Another project which could have been great, as opposed to good, that has fallen victim, I feel, to thinking small & bureaucracy 😢

When I holidayed at Blackpool when i was a child I remember a tram line up Lytham road to the airport, together with an unused connection to Stargate, where it connected with the defunct Lytham trams, where there was a Lytham bus depot, which was previously a tram depot for the Lytham system. I remember a link to North station, where trams travelled to Fleetwood. Why were these ripped up, together with the Marton link from Gyn Square to South Station. the NEW connection is not so new an innovation.

This extension is being built at what must surely be the slowest speed ever, even for Britain - rivalling the inches- per-day of the Midland Metro in Birmingham city centre. By my reckoning the half-mile extension to Blackpool North station will have been seven years in the making when it opens! We just love delaying things in Britain don't we. Compare and contrast with France where twenty-five new tramways have been built since 1980. Truly pathetic.
