Derailed engineering train causes Central Line delays
A derailed engineering train has caused a part suspension on the Central Line today.
The Central Line was suspended between White City and Marble Arch this morning, with severe delays to the rest of the line.
The derailment occurred shortly after midnight in the Holland Park area when a train consisting of two battery locos, two flat wagons and a tamper came off the tracks. It was due to be conducting tamping work on the east end of the Central line and was in transit when the incident happened.
A part suspension of the line was put in place as investigators from RAIB examined the scene.
A TfL spokesman told RTM that investigators were still on site at 8am but work to start getting the train back on the rails started by 9am.
The train was removed and services were finally able to begin operating again at around 12.50pm.
As a result of the reduced service Wanstead and South Woodford stations were also closed this morning owing to overcrowding.
Peter McNaught, operations director for the Central line, said "I apologise to customers for the disruption they suffered this morning on the Central line. This was due to the part suspension of the line which was caused by a derailed engineering train during the night. There were also minor delays on the Hammersmith and City line after a signal failure at Plaistow in east London this morning.
Yesterday signal failures saw the part suspension of the Jubilee Line, as well as delays on the Metropolitan, Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines.
