Khan promises Night Tube on Piccadilly Line in December
Night Tube services are due to start running on the Piccadilly Line from 16 December, fulfilling London mayor Sadiq Khan’s promise to have five lines running by the end of the year.
The Night Tube opened on the Victoria and Central Lines in August, followed by the Jubilee Line in October. Services are due to launch on the Northern Line on 18 November.
The Piccadilly Night Tube will run for 24-hours a day on weekends, from Cockfosters to Heathrow Terminal 5. However, there will be no Night Tube service on the Terminal 4 loop or between Acton Town and Uxbridge.
Khan said: “I pledged to introduce five Night Tube services before the end of the year, and it gives me great pleasure to announce the start date of the fifth of these, the Piccadilly line services.”
He noted that the addition of the Piccadilly Line will help even more thousands of Londoners every weekend, “from those taking in the capital’s cultural landmarks to the many workers who keep London open around the clock”.
The Night Tube is expected to cut journey times across London by an average of 20 minutes, with some cut by as much as an hour.
It is also expected to boost London’s night-time economy by £77m a year and support around 2,000 permanent jobs.
Mark Wild, London Underground’s managing director, said Night Tube is making life easier for customers, with over a million journeys made on the service since it began.
“Launching the Night Tube on the Northern Line next month and the Piccadilly Line in December is an exciting development for London, which will enable even more Tube customers to make the most of everything this great city has to offer,” he added.
The successful launch of the Night Tube follows a lengthy dispute with drivers’ unions which initially caused delays to the project.
