Oyster reaches Gatwick, as shown on major new TfL rail map

TfL has officially extended Oyster card ‘pay as you go’ and contactless accessibility to Gatwick Airport, as reflecting in its latest and largest ever London rail map.

Passengers will be able to use their smartcards between Merstham and Gatwick Airport, both of which have been included in the rail map for the first time, from 11 January, and on Gatwick Express between Victoria and the airport.

Rail minister Claire Perry MP first announced this extension in November last year, saying: “Our plan for passengers is to build a 21st century railway that provides better journeys for all, and improved ticketing is a vital part of that customer experience.

“This extension of Oyster and contactless embraces some of the latest technology, making journeys easier for customers, offering them a vastly more convenient option. As we undertake the biggest rail modernisation since the Victorian era, improving London to Gatwick by rail is another step to a modern railway that strengthens the economy.”

The new map now delineates the full extent of the Oyster sprawl, ringing around the city’s nine zones in a 50-mile diameter reaching far beyond the M25. Oyster cannot, however, be used to travel on Heathrow Express.

The capital’s updated map also features 14 heavy rail services stitching between the original Tube lines, as well as indicates the London Trams route between Wimbledon and New Addington, Beckenham Junction and Elmers End.

As previously revealed by RTM, the map also features a newly created Zone 2/3, which rezoned eight stations originally situated in Zone 3 in order to make travel cheaper for passengers travelling in either direction.

A useful addition. Now how about the ORR forcing TOCs to accept Oyster at other logical desitinations which are part of the built up area of London such as Epsom and Geenhithe (for Bluewater shopping traffic)? The extra "zones" built into the Oyster system mean this can be done without loss of revenue by TOCs - it should increase patronage as so much easier for passengers to use the railway when they don't have to queue up to buy tickets.

This is a start but I'm very concerned that this will cause more issues at stations nearer to London that are not included. For example a passenger can travel on their oyster from London to Horley / Gatwick then travel towards / nearer to London and not be able to use Oyster at Reigate / Edenbridge. Makes it difficult for station and on-train staff to explain.

Great but is it going to be any cheaper for the poor traveller rinsed by the express services to London airports? If not then what's the point? To make Gatwick seem more appealing to build a new runway?!?!

I think in the next few years, we'll see Oyster marching into London's surroundings When Crossrail reaches Reading, surely all stations there will accept Oyster and contactless cards. c2c is also a logical network to add. As a Freedom Pass holder, I need to be able to link that to Oyster, so that to get to outside Zone 6, I just touch in and out once, with perhaps a nominated Oyster or bank card, that is associated with my Freedom Pass That will happen!

How will the Oyster Card readers at Victoria and Gatwick Airport know if you travelled by Gatwick Express (DR £26.70) or by Southern (DR £15.50)?

David Goss   10/01/2016 at 13:33

will my freedom pass cover my journey from east Croydon to Gatwick.

Gill   09/11/2016 at 19:19

can I use my freedom pass to and from Gatwick airport and Victoria [excluding Gatwick Express]?

Bitofakeruffle   24/01/2017 at 18:03

I was told today, 24/1/17 that the Freedom Pass now goes out to Gatwick Airport as opposed to Coulsdon South.

Can my parents use their freedom pass on the gatwick express?

Daniele   16/02/2017 at 18:28

I will be going to Gatwick airport North terminal on the 11/3 from South Kensington tube station using my freedom pass card. I think I need to pay for part of the journey. Can you help me please and tell me how to proceed. Grateful thanks. Daniele

Can I use my oyster freedom pass on Gatwick express?

Trisha   03/05/2017 at 00:37

I want to travel from Henson mainline station to Gatwick airport. Can I use my Freedom Pass. If not is it cheaper to use an Oyster card or a contactless payment debit card?

Anon   06/06/2017 at 10:07

Hi Like others, I would like to know if the Freedom pass has also been extended, i.e can it be used as far as Gatwick? Others who first asked the question, perhaps you have since found the answer, and can help. Thank you!

Beverley Morris `   14/07/2017 at 15:53

I am very confused. I would appear that you can use an oyster card and contactless cards but not the freedom pass, as we discovered on Thursday 13th July 2017 we came back to London via Gatwick airport and the staff were very rude as the freedom pass would not open the gates. we had no intention of using the Gatwick express as we want to go to London Bridge. However it cost £5.20 which is to Croydon East.

Travelling London Bridge to Gatwick on a freedom pass - does this mean I have to get off the train at Coulsdon South which is the boundary station to buy an onward ticket to LGW or can I buy it on the train ?

Barry   04/10/2017 at 10:40

Gatwick is not included for the freedom pass so just buy a ticket from the edge of zone 6 to the airport. You can do this online or at the station machines.
