Consultation launched for next CrossCountry franchise
The DfT has kicked off a public consultation to seek views on various aspects of the next CrossCountry franchise to inform what the department will ask from potential operators when the franchise is renewed next year.
The current franchise, operated by Arriva UK Trains, is due to end in December 2019.
Transport secretary Chris Grayling has said that resolving crowding is his “primary objective” for the next franchise, and that it has the potential to refine its current routes and serve new markets, with Crossrail, HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail impacting on the opportunities to serve or connect to new destinations.
In order for this to happen, he said, CrossCountry must build on its stable foundations and consider the research gathered from the consultation.
David Sidebottom, Transport Focus passenger director, said: “Passengers using CrossCountry tell us that their top priorities for improvement are the ability to get a seat on frequent, punctual services that provide better value for money. Free reliable wi-fi will also make for a more productive and enjoyable journey.
“It is important that passengers have their say on the issues raised and that this feedback helps create new services which better meet passengers’ needs.”
