Elsenham pedestrian gate locking system in place
Engineers have installed a new pedestrian gate locking system at Elsenham station. Notices have been erected to inform passengers that the pedestrian gates will be locked when the road gates are closed to allow trains to pass through. They will remain locked for as long as road gates are closed. During this time, passengers are required to use the newly constructed footbridge when crossing the railway.
Network Rail will continue to carry out some minor landscaping works over the next few weeks, but the footbridge will remain open.
Patrick Hallgate, Network Rail’s Anglia Route Director said: “We’re pleased to have opened the footbridge and installed the locking system to offer a safe alternative to crossing the railway. We very much appreciate the tremendous work of all involved including both Central Trains and One Railway who have helped ensure this project was delivered on time.”
With rail traffic due to increase in future years the construction of a footbridge along with a pedestrian gate locking system will help make the crossing even safer. Teenagers Charlotte Thompson and Olivia Bazlinton tragically died at Elsenham station on 3 December 2005.
