Ep.16 Unlocking rail investment, David Ollerhead

David Ollerhead, Programme Director at Network Rail’s Open for Business Programme, joins host Ailsa Cowen for episode 15 of Rail Technology Magazine’s podcast, Track Talk. David discusses playing with trains as a child, investment into our railway and removing barriers for third parties.

His career at Network Rail began nine years ago but he self-confessed his interest possibly began earlier after admitting, “I did play with train tacks when I was younger.”

He divulges into how we should be, “maintaining and enhancing the railway” by “unlocking rail investment.”

SME’s are also talked about with David revealing Network Rail are, “eager to work with SME’s and the supply chain” after working with 3,000 SME’s in the last financial year.

The newly formed Acceleration Unit from the Department of Transport is also a “statement of confidence,” according to David.

His enthusiasm for eliminating carbon emissions is also a big talking point, with him stating, “I do see the rail industry as a major contributor towards sustainability.”

David’s passion for the railway is unquestionable. He tells the listener to “be confident there’s a long-term future for the railway.”
