HS2 engineering consultancy relocates to new £7m Birmingham headquarters
The engineering company responsible of the redesign and delivery of HS2’s Curzon Street Station has completed its relocation into its new £7m Birmingham headquarters.
WSP, a global engineering consultancy, moved over 700 staff from smaller officers into the city’s state-of-the-art Mailbox building after the £7m refurbishment.
The company says the move will “consolidate WSP’s Midlands presence” as it prepares to deliver a number of projects in the city, including designing the delivering the Curzon Street Station ahead of HS2.
WSP announced the deal for the 46,700 sq ft space in January, and it says it wants to establish further collaboration between its specialist engineers, technicians, scientists, surveyors and environment specialists.
Malcolm Davidson, director at WSP, said: “This move is a key milestone for WSP, one that highlights our commitment to Birmingham and the Midlands.
“We wanted this office to embody our specialist approach and strive for excellence, and with projects including HS2’s Curzon Street Station just getting underway, it provides the perfect location for our staff to thrive and continue to deliver the high-calibre work we’re known for.”
WSP’s own team designed the workplace in conjunction with Idaco Ltd and refurbishment specialist Overbury.
The managing director of Overbury Central, Andrew Wood, said it was an honour to be able to transform such an iconic Birmingham building.
He said: “Birmingham has had a record few years in terms of take-up of office space and as demand continues to grow for Grade A space, there’s a real opportunity for landlords to refurbish their space, like Brockton Capital has done at the Mailbox with WSP.”
The plans for Birmingham’s HS2 Curzon Street station were given the green light back in 2017.
Birmingham revealed its HS2 masterplan back in 2014, and just last month Chris Grayling and West Midlands mayor Andy Street marked the start of construction of the high-speed rail line in Birmingham.
More recently, new images of the Curzon Street Station and of Solihull’s Interchange station were released giving an idea of what they’ll look like when finished in 2026.
