What are you doing to prepare for the digital revolution?
Digital technology is enhancing and transforming the way the rail network in the UK is run. Increasingly, tickets and rail cards are available instantly on the smartphones of passengers rather than in paper form.
Modern forms of traffic management are also getting a foothold across the country, one example being the Luminate Digital TMS which is currently being trialled on routes between Paddington and Bristol.
And on the workforce side, Network Rail has recently introduced new apprenticeships in cyber security and digital railway to reflect this shift to new ways of working.
It’s essential, therefore, that companies across the supply chain know how to respond to these changes to prepare and capitalise on the opportunities offered by digital technologies.
One event run by Business in the Community (BITC) and Fujitsu aims to show businesses how they can do just that.
The Building Trust in a Digital Transport Future event, held at Fujitsu’s London office on 17 October, will host case studies and discussions on how companies should react to the social and environmental consequences of digital transformation in the sector.
The jam-packed day will include roundtable discussions hosted by government and business stakeholders, as well as case studies from Fujitsu, BITC and other major rail organisations on how companies can embrace the inclusive digital revolution.
“It’s such an exciting time for our transport systems," said Stephen Farrant, BITC's director of Sustainability Innovation and Sectors.
"Digital offers countless opportunities to enhance capacity, improve our journeys as passengers, increase safety and drive affordability.
"But we also need to plan for some of the unintended consequences of such a fundamental shift," he continued. "Big issues like data privacy, the digital skills shortage, automation of transport jobs and digital inclusivity still need to be addressed.
"We hope you can join us to help shape the sector’s response at this crossroads moment.”
