New access to York station as part of major brownfield redevelopment plans
New plans including a new access point to York station and the expansion of the National Railway Museum headline groundbreaking proposals of creating 6,500 jobs in the city.
A collaborative partnership between Homes England, Network Rail, York City Council and the museum submitted an application yesterday for planning permission for York Central, a major redevelopment project at one of the largest city centre brownfield sites in the UK.
Amongst the plans is a new concourse which will lead through to the new access point at York station, reducing the need for users to walk around to the other side of the station to enter the building.
York Central is the large brownfield site to the west of the city’s railway station. It lies between the A19 and A59 road corridors, and is contained by operational lines.
The area contains existing buildings which will be retained, including the National Railway Museum, private housing, and businesses. The rest of the underused site will allow new development to take place.
The proposals will aim to expand the size of York’s economy by 20% and create around 6,500 jobs. Work on the project will begin next year, with developers looking to create new residential, cultural, and business neighbourhoods in York city centre.
Once validated the application will undergo a 30-day consultation period, where anyone who wishes to raise issues or query any details can do so.
Project lead from York Central Partnership Tamsin Hart-Jones said the plans are a “huge step forward” in delivery of the project.
She added: “A positive decision will unlock this underused piece of land and demonstrate a commitment to seeing it brought forward for the good of the city and its residents. We would encourage as many people as possible to view the plans and make comments to the planning authority within the consultation period.
“This is part of playing an active role in how York Central evolves, as the masterplan is the blueprint for future development on the site, but what actually gets built can still be shaped.”
