Over 3km of oldest overhead wire replaced over bank holiday
Over 3km of overhead wire between Ilford and Maryland has been installed over the bank holiday weekend.
The upgrades form part of the £250m programme to upgrade the overhead wiring system between Chelmsford and London Liverpool Street.
The work is expected to reduce delays on the main line and support the growing number of passengers, and will allow Greater Anglia to run its fleet of new trains from 2019.
Currently, the wiring system in place is one of the oldest in the country, and work to replace the stretch between Chelmsford and Ilford has already been completed.
Meliha Duymaz, Network Rail’s route managing director for Anglia, said that the improvements will last for decades to come.
While the work was carried out, over 250 rail replacement buses were used, said Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director.
He explained: “We know people would rather travel all the way to and from London by train at all times, but these engineering works are vital to the transformation of the railway in East Anglia, so that passengers can enjoy the full benefits of brand new trains running on more reliable infrastructure.”
