‘Still too many’ delays and cancellations, despite interim Northern timetable
The north of England depends on a “resilient and reliable transport network,” Transport for the North (TfN) has said, as rail disruptions rumble on across the region.
The comments came as members of the TfN partnership board met in Manchester this week to discuss the issues regarding rail service disruption across the network.
During the meeting, which was called following Northern’s implementation of an interim timetable on rail service routes, members were updated on Northern’s current performance levels and discussed the way forward.
John Cridland, chair of TfN, said that the disruption has caused “distress” and had a “very real impact” on people’s lives.
“Our immediate focus must be on giving passengers the reliable rail service they deserve. Whilst the interim timetable has allowed passengers to better plan their journeys and there are tentative signs of improvement, we recognise that there are still too many delays, cancellations and overcrowded trains,” he said.
TfN’s partners were “resolute” that the Rail North Partnership review of decision making, led by Cllr Judith Blake and Jo Johnson, will be used to ensure that this disruption will not be repeated.
Northern has offered assurances that the interim measures taken are allowing the rail operator to work towards delivering a restored timetable service by the end of July.
“We now call for a detailed compensation package for those affected. This should certainly include season ticket holders.
“The board also recognised and discussed the losses suffered by passengers and businesses,” Cridland added.
He continued: “The very prosperity of the north of England depends on a resilient and reliable transport network. We remain united in pursuing solutions to the current crisis which delivers this for northern citizens.”
Following the meeting, Cllr Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority representative on the board, commented: “The Transport for the North partnership board meeting demonstrated strong support for the review I am leading into the rail disruption which will set out far-reaching recommendations to ensure this situation is not repeated.
“Board members were united in their determination to secure comprehensive compensation for passengers across the north of England and that reflects the wider economic impact of the chaos in rail services.”
She added that as Northern progresses towards implementing the full timetable, it should put the needs of passengers first.
