Two dead in level crossing crash

Two men have died after a car was hit by a train at a railway crossing in Lincolnshire. The passenger train hit the vehicle at Great Coates crossing near Grimsby at 7.39pm yesterday (Tuesday).

One man died at the scene and the other en route to hospital. The train was travelling at 60mph through a working half barrier crossing.

There were five passengers on the TransPennine Cleethorpes to Scunthorpe train, none of whom were injured.

“We are keeping an open mind but indications so far are that the crossing was working correctly and this was a tragic accident,” the BTP spokesman said.

The RAIB has been informed.

Why do people take these risks, not to think of the two families that has lost loved ones, the poor driver knowing he cant do anything to prevent this accident

Terry Dicks   19/04/2013 at 11:31

We proposed a low cost retrofit system which could tell the driver how far away the train is and how many seconds to arrival. Do people think this would make things better or worse? ie would drivers think they have time to get across or would it make them stop knowing the train is 10 seconds away?
