Is high speed Labour’s last chance?
Gordon Brown has come out saying that Labour will have a fully costed plan for high speed rail in their election manifesto.
Apparently their plans will include a precise route and timetable for when work is to be begin.
Of course this is great news for those looking for jobs in rail… if it ever happens that is.
One must remember that all of those future rail jobs hang on
a promise made by a government which is the metaphorical equivalent of a wounded animal, grasping at policies which
it believes might just sustain in the ‘court of public opinion’, to quote Harriet Harman.
According to reports, Labour is planning for the work to
begin in 2017 and have the first trains running between Birmingham and London by 2025.
But again, will it ever happen?
Is this just another election promise which will be shelved when it becomes inconvenient, such as a referendum on the European Constitution?
For a start, where will the money come from?
Who knows?
Not even Gordon probably.
