No time to be playing politics
With a general election looming, I am sure that we will hear many statements of good intent being made towards the rail industry.
But will anything actually come of them?
Will any rail jobs be created by Lembit Opik’s attempt at rail renationalisation? Will any rail vacancies become available, simply because Gordon Brown has finally admitted that the country needs a high-speed rail system in a pamphlet? Probably not.
However what is particularly offensive is the political point scoring which seems to go on at the expense of hard working men and women whose rail jobs rely on the decisions of politicians.
Take for example the scrapping of the Glasgow Airport link the fact that it won’t go ahead is a major blow to the rail industry as a whole, so politicians who seek to further their own careers by jumping on the bandwagon, when they should be concentrating on improving public life, are impressing nobody.
