Constructive scrutiny welcome for HS2
Earlier this week the House of Lords Economic Affairs Select Committee stated that the government has not yet made a “convincing case” for HS2 causing a media frenzy.
And while we at RTM feel it is only right that the Committee investigated the cost of the project and its ability to rebalance the economy, should it be used to derail a project so close to Royal Assent?
John Longworth, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce, came out with some sage advice, saying: “Parliamentary scrutiny of major infrastructure projects is important to ensure they deliver value for money.
“However, this scrutiny must not be used to derail or delay the construction of projects that are vital to future UK success.”
It will be interesting though to see how a new government after the general election on 7 May approaches the major infrastructure project.
