Labour set to unveil part re-nationalisation rail plans
It now looks set that Labour will unveil a promise to change the law to allow for the part re-nationalisation of the rail network, if the party comes to power.
As RTM reported last week, original plans to re-nationalise the “entire system” have been put aside. And, instead, Ed Miliband is expected to call for public and not-for-profit companies to be allowed to run train services as well as private firms.
However, this decision will not be popular with some of the party faithful at this weekend’s Labour part conference, who are calling for full re-nationalisation.
Labour is also facing pressure from rail companies who have warned that this move could deter them from bidding and investing in the railways as it would increase the costs of them competing to run rail franchises.
What we can safely predict from this weekend's National Policy Forum is that there will be some people elated and many disgruntled with the party leader’s decision.
