Rail industry loses voice for the workers
The rail industry today lost one of its most colourful, combative and single-minded figures, the likes of whom we are unlikely to see again for a long time.
Bob Crow, the general secretary of the Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT), was a fighter, a leader and an extremely strong voice for his members.
It is extremely saddening news to hear that he passed away in the early hours of this morning, but it is true testament to Bob’s character that numerous warm wishes and messages have flowed in about him – including from steadfast political opponents. In fact, if you go on any social media site you will see the flood of messages from people offering their thoughts, prayers and condolences to his family.
It is fair to say we at RTM, and many others in the industry, will miss Bob, whom we always assumed would be around for a long time yet. He had a great knack for a feisty quote – he recently used the phrases "dangerous and provocative nonsense", "potentially lethal implications" and "cavalier disregard" in a single sentence – and for winding up politicians. It’s hard to think of many other union leaders so beloved of their members.
