Ripples of disruption
The damage at Hatfield caused by a landslip in February has been far greater and more complicated to manage than anyone originally thought. Network Rail has just announced several renewals works which will now be postponed, to keep as many services going as possible.
The problems caused by the initial collapse of the colliery have spread out across the network, as other projects must be delayed and deferred. Will intensive maintenance be enough to keep these structures going until renewals can be rescheduled?
There are not many options available, but without a clear end in sight it is difficult to conceive of the full scale of this geotechnical disaster.
