Time to train
Carillion’s training centre is now certified to provide the practical and theoretical skills needed to undertake the planned £2bn electrification expansion programme.
The industry has a long gap to bridge before it can rely on a sustainable workforce to deliver the huge infrastructure investment over the coming years. This will involve promoting rail as a viable career choice for young people – something many organisations, including UKRITT and now the CILT, have committed to.
It will also require a significant up-skilling of the workforce. Train operators, Government and the supply chain must come together to make this a reality now, not just a consideration for the future.
