What makes a truly outstanding project?

With the rail industry currently in a state of continuous change, there are plenty of well-run and innovative new projects being delivered across the country.

From the construction of the Ordsall Chord in the north to the completion of Crossrail in the capital and the continuing electrification of the GWML, there’s a range of different programmes ongoing which are being delivered, albeit to varying degrees of success.

But what is it that transforms a good project into a great one? What does excellence in rail look like? And importantly, what is a truly outstanding project?

Though these questions are difficult to answer, UKRIA’s ‘Outstanding Project’ category looks to recognise rail organisations currently doing good work to deliver brilliant projects set to revolutionise travel.

The respected award, and one of the ceremony’s main highlights, is split into three subcategories: for small projects costing under £3m, medium projects costing between £3m and £20m, and large projects costing over £20m.

The sought-after accolade seeks to celebrate the most impressive projects going on across the country, and is a great chance to be recognised by the industry at its most prestigious awards ceremony.

Last year, the Staffordshire Alliance, made up of VolkerRail, Atkins, Laing O’Rourke and Network Rail, won for the subcategory for large projects, whilst Solihull MBC, Carillion, SLC Rail and Network Rail won in the medium category and London Underground took the prize for small project of the year.
