Rail Technology reports how ITT Flygt’s ‘new force in dewatering’ 2600 pumps will exceed current market standards in terms of durability. With a new hydraulic design, the recently launched 2600 Series provides longer periods of maintenance free operation, even in the most demanding conditions.
Flygt engineer Sixten Englesson developed a prototype for the world’s first submersible drainage pump in 1947, known as the ‘parrot cage’ and most recently the Bibo-pump (2000 Series). These pumps brought about a revolution as operators could totally submerse in water a pump with a close coupled electric motor. To date more than 70,000 have been sold in the UK and world wide.
The 2600 Series product launch has provided the platform for Flygt to demonstrate its technical competence and commitment to research and development. Flygt is confident that the new 2600 Series is well suited to provide the most effective solution to almost all dewatering and flood control applications within the rail sector, both over ground and underground.
Additional products from Flygt which would benefit rail installation applications ranging from cleaning and washing to water supply and dewatering include a comprehensive range of dry installed, prime assisted diesel/electric pumps; progressive cavity and multistage pumps.
2000 Series
For the last four decades the 2000 Series of drainage pumps have been solid performers in most dirty water situations requiring a transportable pump capable of withstanding abrasive content, such as sand. With motor sizes from 0.75 to 90 kW and output flows up to 280 l/s they have been one of Flygt’s most successful and long lasting heavy-duty submersible pump ranges.
Flygt 2000 Series drainage pumps were used on the prestigious Channel Tunnel project for their reliability and superior wear parts resistance. More than 500 Flygt 2000 Series pumps were supplied to the UK side, each one aiming to keep operations moving throughout the life of this groundbreaking project.
2600 product manager, Simon Jones says, “A testament to their capabilities is that many original 2000 Series pumps are still going strong, providing a clear reflection of Flygt’s dedication to product quality and commitment to service. The reason for the step change is that the basic 2000 Series models are between 25 and 40 years old. Whilst they continue to fulfil customer and end-user requirements, and three models (the 2201, 2250 and 2400) will still be available, we wanted to develop a new generation of dewatering pumps which meet the needs of today’s changing marketplace.”
2600 Series
Keeping operations moving is a key driver for today’s construction industry. Flygt’s 2600 series radically reduces component wear and the need for maintenance to maximise working time and profitability. The six 2600 pumps cover almost any dewatering application and have been re-engineered from the ground up, as Simon explains:
“Flygt 2600 series pumps feature the new patented DuraSpin hydraulic system and a new impeller design, which significantly improve wear resistance and sustain performance over time. The impellers are made from high-chrome cast iron for outstanding efficiency and wear resistance. They are easy to adjust for optimum performance, with just one trimming screw. The patented Spin-Out system drastically reduces seal wear. The result is lower overall cost of ownership.”
The slim line design of the 2600 versus the wide base design of the 2000 Series broadens the dewatering applications in which it can be used, enabling it to fit into narrower pits and pipes.
For ease of use and maintenance the part numbers have been reduced by up to 50%. A modular approach makes it simpler to remove and repair specific parts, and a uniform design means the same principles are applied to service all six pumps. This commonality of parts reduces the amount of stock holding required at the customer end.
Simon Jones concludes: “The 2600 Series builds on and incorporates all the experience we’ve gained over the years to take dewatering pumps to a new level. We will continue to invest in new technology and R&D to lead the way in this area and meet ever increasing customer demands for consistent performance over time and economy in all market sectors.”
