One million steel sleepers for the U.K. market
Since being awarded Network Rail¹s steel sleeper contract in 2003, GMT has now manufactured and supplied over one million sleepers for the UK market.
In addition to satisfying the increased demand for Network Rail¹s steel sleeper requirements, GMT has also broadened its customer base to include sleepers funded by the Scottish Executive and the Welsh Assembly.
These include 8,000 sleepers for the Ebbw Valley railway project with Amey Rail and with First Engineering over 30,000 standard steel sleepers and 2,000 guardrail sleepers for the Stirling to Alloa Kincardine Rail Link. Also with First Engineering, sleepers for the Aberdeen Freight Relocation.
GMT has made a major investment in a state of the art manufacturing facility in Wallasey in order to cope with the current high demand for economic sleepers. The whole manufacturing process right through to transportation has been streamlined. Robots move the heavy steel sleeper section through purpose made dedicated machinery which has built in quality checks at each stage to ensure cost effective and constant performance.
GMT is constantly striving to increase its range of products to cope with the demand for economic innovation. Following the success of its twin tube UTX sleepers they intend to introduce a purpose made steel trough sleeper for larger cable crossing applications.
As an approved supplier of signalling equipment to Network Rail, GMT was involved with the development of the stainless steel trackside housing interiors at their inception and for over a decade has manufactured and supplied to Unipart Rail and major contractors.
GMT is located in the Merseyside area with adjacent to Birkenhead and Liverpool docks and freeports, within one mile of the motorway network. There is storage area available for 30,000 sleepers on GMT¹s two acre site.
