Rail job worker becomes inventor

Nexus employee Robin Shortt has used his previous experience of working down the mines to invent a new work belt.

The belt, which offers much support for the wearers’ lower back, along with offering them greater stability.

Robin, who works as an Overhead Line Maintainer, said: “I made a work belt very similar to this one when I was working down in the mine. I used an old strip of the conveyor belt to make it, but it worked really well.

“The work belts we used when we’re out fixing Metro infrastructure were okay, but they didn’t really provide enough back support. That’s when I had the idea of this new design.”

Rail job bosses at Nexus where so impressed by Robin’s design that they ran a trial, which saw a great response from Robin’s rail job colleagues.
