Tories make rail promises

The Conservatives have made their latest pitch to win voters from the rail industry by promising to ‘build Crossrail’ and begin work on a north to south high speed rail line.
These promises were made by shadow chancellor George Osborne in a report by the party, where it lays out how it intends to make Britain a thriving economic success with a good transport system as its backbone.
The Conservatives’ report, called A New Economic Model: Eight Benchmarks for Britain, says: “We will create a stable and transparent framework to encourage private sector investment in infrastructure. We support Crossrail…”
“We will begin work on Britain’s first ever North-South high speed rail line to connect London and Heathrow with Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, increasing
capacity and reducing travel times.
Aside from promises about high speed rail and Crossrail, the report also says: “We will also reform the way our existing railways are run, with longer franchises to encourage private sector investment in much needed improvements.”
