£15.5m Crossrail contract awarded to VolkerRail
Network Rail has awarded a £15.5m contract for works as part of the Crossrail programme. VolkerRail will begin works at Acton freight yard to improve access and increase the capacity for freight.
VolkerRail will be jointly delivering the works with the rail division of sister company Volker Fitzpatrick. Work will include plain line track renewals, the installation of new switches and crossings and modifications to the overhead line system on the main line.
The remodelling is due for completion in early 2013 with additional works, including a new diveunder, to be complete by 2016.
The modifications will allow trains to enter and exit the yard without needing to cross main line passenger tracks and will increase the capcity for freight.
Jorge Mendonca, Crossrail programme director at Network Rail, said: “The work atActonis an important step in delivering a more reliable service for passengers while providing more capacity in the Paddington approaches area.
“Network Rail is transforming the railway to make Crossrail a success and is working with many partners, including VolkerRail and Volker Fitzpatrick, to produce something that is safe, efficient and cost-effective.”
