How biometrics can help improve health and safety measures on railway construction projects

Biometric identity, time and attendance specialists Donseed looks at how biometric technology is already starting to enhance health and safety measures on railway construction projects.

Advances in technology are starting to transform the way in which the rail network in the UK is managed, operated and maintained. There is no denying that the drive to digitise the UK’s railways is well under way.

This has also brought enormous opportunities in the field of railway health and safety, opening-up a previously unimagined scope for a more holistic health and safety framework.

But there is still much that can be done. The verification of time and attendance, training certifications, site inductions, staff fatigue and accidents, for example, often remains on paper records.

This manual input is time consuming, inefficient and open to costly mistakes.

Biometric identity, time and attendance solutions, in contrast, are becoming widely accepted as a simple and secure solution to many issues raised with railway projects, including health and safety measures.

The real value in the data that these biometric systems provide has yet to be fully recognised by many in the railway industry.

While the systems are well-known for the efficiencies that can be realised and ultimately, where money can be saved, the potential for improve health and safety measures is sometimes overlooked.

Tackling fatigue and staff safety risks with Donseed

Donseed’s biometric identity, time and attendance solution integrates leading biometric hardware and advanced cloud-based technology and can be used to identity and minimise exposure to health and safety risks.

For example, at the point of sign-in, the Donseed system requires workers to confirm their use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and their understanding of site specific health and safety requirements.

If PPE requirements change on a project, the system can be easily updated with registered individuals notified by email or text, as well as at the point of entry when they next sign-in.

Once the data is captured onsite using biometric identification, it can be accessed at any time in the cloud.

Donseed’s unique alert function can then be used to set up protocols on projects so management are informed of any critical situations such as the absence of key staff, when there is no first aider on site, non-conformance or worker fatigue through automated threshold alerts.

The opportunities for the rail sector to benefit from biometric systems and the data they deliver is almost limitless. Watch the video below for more information on how Donseed could work for you.

Donseed is trusted onsite by main contractors and specialist sub-contractors including Careys Civil Engineering, Severfield, Costain, Keltbray, Oliver Connell & Son Ltd and many other leading construction companies.
