Structural stage of Canary Wharf Crossrail station complete
The striking timber lattice roof above Canary Wharf Crossrail station has been completed on time, and marks the final stage of construction at the site.
Canary Wharf Group plc began work on the new station in May 2009, and now the last of 56 aluminium louvres has been placed in the Foster + Partners designed roof to allow air to flow to a roof garden below, which will be open to the public from next year.
There will also be 115,000 sq ft of shops, bars and restaurants, with the first phase due to open in May 2015, three years before the station.
Back in 2009, Canary Wharf Group plc started work on the project by creating a 250m long and 30m wide watertight dam in the waters of North Dock, using an innovative ‘silent’ piling method. The station box was then built ‘top down,’ 28 metres below the water surface to create the ticket hall and platform levels.
Canary Wharf Group secretary John Garwood said: “The project has run smoothly and on schedule. The completion of the roof marks the final stage of construction.
“It will certainly be a stunning building of architectural significance for the UK, and a world-leading showcase of innovative design.”
Canary Wharf is the most progressed of Crossrail’s 10 new stations, with eight 40 metre-long escalators, four lifts, flooring, wall cladding and space for station services all in place in the ticket hall level.
