Brett starts work on CTRL infrastructure maintenance depot

Source: Rail Technology Magazine Oct/Nov 2006

Brett Civils, a division of Brett Construction, one of the south east’s leading contractors, has started work on a £1.7 million civil and external works project to create a new Infrastructure Maintenance Depot as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL). Working for main contractor, international project management and service specialists AMEC, Brett will be providing all civil engineering and external works for the trackside depot at Singlewell in Kent.

The contract includes all drainage and foundations works, along with the creation of structural floors for both buildings - one of which will provide for inspection and repair of the CTRL infrastructure maintenance rail fleet, whilst the other will provide workshop and office facilities. Externally Brett will be undertaking all works, including the creation of an access road, car park and pavements, and finishing with a combination of block, concrete slab and black top.

The depot is being constructed to provide support to the new high-speed railway between the Channel Tunnel and St. Pancras. The work is being undertaken for Union Railways (North) a subsidiary of London and Continental Railways (LCR) who were appointed by the Government to design, build, finance and operate the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

Due to the mammoth size of the project, LCR has split the project into two separate sections. Union Railways (South) have completed Section 1 from the Channel Tunnel to Fawkham Junction in Kent, where trains switch onto existing tracks to Waterloo International; whilst Union Railways (North) are completing Section 2 from Southfleet, under the Thames, over ground to Dagenham and then in tunnel (approximately 30m below ground level) to the Kings Cross Rail Lands and into the completely refurbished St Pancras Station.

“We were chosen to work with AMEC on this project due to our impeccable safety record, proven track record and reputation with such schemes,” commented Ian Jordan, Brett’s civils director. “We also have the ability to work effectively alongside other contractors and adapt to a continuously changing programme of works.”
