Crucial work to link Bolton station and interchange hits milestone
Considerable progress has now been made on the project to upgrade Bolton’s transport interchange and build a new ‘skylink’ bridge between the building and Bolton rail station.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has confirmed that the first steel span making up the bridge has been lifted into place by a 750-tonne crane.
The span is 3.6m high, 3.8m wide and 20.1m long and oversees the interchange’s bus apron.
Cllr Andrew Fender, TfGM committee chair, said that the bridge was a vital part of the interchange project and will work to integrate bus and rail services more smoothly.
“When complete later this year, the new interchange will transform a key gateway into the town centre and provide much-improved facilities for passengers,” added Cllr Fender.
His colleague, leader of Bolton Council Cllr Cliff Morris, said: “The new interchange is now really coming together and this first piece of the connecting bridge shows how the huge project fits into place in our redevelopment of the town centre.
“The skylink bridge will provide a seamless link connecting the railway station with the interchange. The whole project moves Bolton’s transport links into the 21st century and provides a fitting gateway into the town centre.”
Today’s announcement follows other works being done around Bolton station, including crucial electrification works that began last month ahead of electric trains being introduced.
