First Class 387-1 enters service on Great Northern

The first train in the Class 387/1 Electrostars fleet entered service on the Great Northern line this week.

From 10 October, the four-carriage train began running six services every day between King's Cross and Cambridge/Letchworth Garden City.

The Class 387/1s are the first air-conditioned trains on the line and also feature two-by-two seating, power sockets, modern passenger information systems and improved disability accessibility. They replace Class 317s and 321s that are around 30 years old.

Keith Jipps, Great Northern passenger services director, said: “We're thrilled the new train is in service. Passengers have said they think it's a vast improvement. They think it's light and airy and welcome the two-by-two seating.”

In total, Great Northern operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) will transfer 29 Class 387/1s from the Bedford-Brighton Thameslink route to Great Northern, to make way for the introduction of the Class 700 Desiro City trains.

From May next year, subject to Network Rail engineering work, they will also run on the Fen Line from Cambridge to King’s Lynn.

Their introduction will be followed by two other trains on Great Northern: the Class 700, which will run to and from Peterborough and Cambridge and link into the Thameslink route at St Pancras International in 2018; and the Class 717, which will operate on Moorgate services from 2019.

The change in seat design and layout might put some people off, but working PIS will be appreciated (unlike on the older units and the Class 700s!) and SDO capability on the Cambridge branch is long overdue.

Andrew Gwilt   13/10/2016 at 19:51

The 29 Class 387/1's will operate between London Kings Cross and Cambridge but is also to be operated between London Kings Cross-Peterborough and Kings Linn and also to Cambridge North once the new station is opened next year as it's to replace the 13 Class 321's and 12 Class 317's that are heading to Northern and Abellio Scotrail or Greater Anglia (Class 320 if being transferred to Abellio Scotrail) with Thameslink Class 700's 8-Car and 12-Car trains also to extend to Cambridge, Peterborough and Kings Linn from 2018 to/from Brighton, Wimbledon and Gatwick Airport. The Class 717's will operate between Moorgate-Stevenage & Hertford North (via Hertford Loop) and Moorgate-Potters Bar, Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth Garden City and Hitchin as 25 Class 717's are soon to be built and will soon start service from late next year or in early 2018 replacing the Class 313's that could be heading to Southern (Coastway) or South Wales.

Andrew... ScotRail and Northern do not need your cast-offs, stop trying to shaft them on us.

Andrew Gwilt   14/10/2016 at 09:19

My option David. So shut it.

David   14/10/2016 at 10:58

Your option? Do you work for Angel Trains or Eversholt?

Andrew Gwilt   14/10/2016 at 12:37

I dont work for either those companies. I am a train enthusiast. Please dont judge me any more. End of discussion.

Humbug   14/10/2016 at 13:21

Please do keep it up, you two, far more entertaining than the article :-)

Jerry Alderson   14/10/2016 at 15:16

While we're in 'let's critrise Andrew' mood, please may I encourage Andrew to use apostrophes correctly. There are used for omission (where one or more letters or digits are removed) and possession (to show ownership or association) but NEVER for plurals. So, they are Class 717s.

Andrew Gwilt   14/10/2016 at 15:17

Well this debate is likely to carry on but Im keen on what the Class 387's will provide better services.

Jerry Alderson (Fix Typo On Previous)   14/10/2016 at 15:18

Oops - let's "critrise" me for failing to type criticise properly!

Andrew Gwilt   14/10/2016 at 15:19

So are you teaming up with David. In that case. Get a life Jerry.

Steve B Collins   14/10/2016 at 15:24

At least he's not ignorant. How difficult is it to learn how to use an apostrophe? Any ten-year-old should be able to manage it. Perhaps Andrew should stop posting his rubbish here until he can learn how to string sentences together. Even Germans don't have sentences as long as his 19:51 post.

David   14/10/2016 at 17:05

Ironically, I am German myself ;)

Andrew Gwilt   14/10/2016 at 17:09

Steve B Collins. Just ignore me for once.

David   14/10/2016 at 17:09

Andrew Gwilt   14/10/2016 at 17:10

Let me hear you speak in German David.

Boris   14/10/2016 at 17:11

Let us hear you speak correct English Andrew.

Blower46   14/10/2016 at 18:25

Arguing about EMU's whatever next. Now if you had been discussing about loco hauled services that might be a little more interesting!

Andrew Gwilt   14/10/2016 at 18:43

Boris. I don't need you trolling on me. Just like David usually trolls whenever I comment.

Jonmod   14/10/2016 at 23:30

Nobody is "trolling on" you Andrew.

Andrew Gwilt   15/10/2016 at 00:29

Ok. Then I just ignore. And let you idiots continue debating.

Matthew Read   16/10/2016 at 21:45

At least I can think of places to send the EMU's why not send the 317's to South Wales and the 321's can go to the Westcountry when they get wired.

Andrew Gwilt   17/10/2016 at 20:06

Why not. But sadly the Class 317's and Class 321's are likely to get scrapped but they could get a new lease of life to be transferred to Wales and Southwest England once the wires have been erected and the power is on once the electrification has been completed.

Sam   07/11/2016 at 21:18

Well since the 'new' trains have been introduced on the Peterborough - Kings Cross line, those of us that get on at Arlesey, now no longer get a seat. But at least we have a/C!
