TfL reveals Barking Riverside Extension shortlist
The contractors being considered to build the London Overground Barking Riverside Extension are down to a shortlist of three.
TfL announced that Balfour Beatty, Carillion PLC and VolkerFitzpatrick have been shortlisted for the contract to build the 4.5km extension of the Gospel Oak to Barking line.
A Transport and Works Order to build the extension was submitted in March. If it is approved, TfL will submit a formal invitation to tender.
Jonathan Fox, TfL's director of London Rail, said: “The London Overground network has helped regenerate other parts of London by providing a frequent, reliable and high standard rail services, and this rail extension will help Barking riverside to grow and develop.”
Construction of the extension is due to begin in late 2017, with services running in 2021. A public consultation last year found ‘overwhelming’ support for the extension, which is intended to unlock local development, including 10,800 new homes.
