Bakerloo Line extension ‘firmly on track’ for 2030 opening

Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed it will press on with the proposed Bakerloo Line extension, pledging to begin the detailed technical work in 2016 and potentially start construction by 2024.

The technical work will try to build a case to central government for taking the line from Elephant & Castle to Lewisham via Old Kent Road. The estimated cost is £2.57bn.

If the project gets the go-ahead by 2020, TfL plans to build the extension from 2024 to 2030.

Following TfL’s consultation on the extension in 2014, during which 96% of the 15,000 respondents indicated “overwhelming support” towards plans, it has now published a summary report of how the various options have been assessed.

The route to Lewisham via Old Kent Road – which TfL claims had the strongest case, as it could deliver it more quickly and affordably – was one of the two in the original proposal, which also suggested a different route via Camberwell and Peckham Rye.

But according to Richard de Cani, TfL’s managing director for planning, no final decisions have been made yet, with another public consultation expected next year after more detailed work is carried out.

An extension beyond Lewisham still remains an option for a future phase.

Funding options are still being considered, with an existing potential to look at similar funding mechanisms as that being used for the Northern line extension – which is being financed by GLA borrowing, repaid from developers’ contributions, the community infrastructure levy and income from higher business rates, according to TfL’s Finance & Policy Committee board papers.

TfL will also work closely with the London boroughs of Lewisham and Southwark, Network Rail and other relevant businesses as it develops plans further.

Boris Johnson MP, mayor of London and strong supporter of the extension, said: “The extension of the Bakerloo line will provide a vital new transport link for people living and working in south London. It will help to spur the delivery of jobs, homes and regeneration in this part of the capital and provide much-needed new capacity on a key underground line.

“The case for a route to Lewisham via Old Kent Road is strong and TfL will now be working closely with the boroughs to fine tune our plans to the next important stage. We’re now firmly on track to get construction on this major project underway by 2024 and have it up and running by 2030.”

Freudian slip? "TfL will not be working closely with the boroughs to fine tune our plans "

RTM   18/12/2015 at 12:51

Ah! Thanks for spotting that. Corrected. Our error, not the mayor's...

I'm guessing this should be "now": "We’re not firmly on track to get construction" too.....

RTM   18/12/2015 at 14:07

Yes indeed. Sorry for the mistake!

I seem to recall hearing about a Bakerloo Line extension in 1946 so it is only 84 years late.

I have read the report in detail and it says that a reopened Camberwell station on Thameslink will be as good, but a lot cheaper, than a Camberwell Underground station. TfL would seem to be hoping that this station could be built to open with Crossrail. If they can pull that one off, it will be brilliant for London.

Will it take over the Overground spur to New Cross? If it did it would make the Overground more effective and give a better service to the residents of New Cross. Anyway it looks a bit like a Cross Rail 2 flipped over which ain't no bad thing.

Chris   20/12/2015 at 15:09

How could it take over the Overground? The first phase will run between Elephant & Castle and Lewisham, mostly if not entirely in new tunnels.

The Bakerloo Line extension to Lewisham and to Hayes is a good idea and could be completed by 2030 or before 2030 with London Overground to be extended to Bromley North taking over few stations as well Grove Park, Sunbridge Park and Bromley North stations and London Overground could also be extended to Dartford via Charlton/Abbey Wood, via Falcon and via Falconwood if it goes ahead for London Overground to be extended to Dartford along with Crossrail which could also be extended from Abbey Wood to Dartford, Gravesend and as far as Rochester. But what about the Victoria Line. Will the Victoria Line be extended in the future including a extension from Walthamstow Central to Woodford to interchange with Central Line and extension from Brixton to Camberley and possibly extended to Beckenham Junction or New Beckenham to interchange with Croydon Tramlink and Southeastern Trains.

There should be an extension of the northern line from Oval to camberwell green to peckham high road and then to peckham then extended to meet with bakerloo line newcross and then the bakerloo line should be extended to bexley from old Kent road 1 to old Kent road 2 which should be where the asda is on old Kent road then to new cross, Lewisham there should be Greenwich 2 tocatford , blackheath, Woolwich to welling and bexleyheath and should meet with cross rail in abbeywood.
