Public back latest proposed plans for Bakerloo Line extension

Plans to extend the Bakerloo Line have been largely backed by the public, who have also suggested some changes to the proposed works.

A public consultation into TfL’s proposed works held earlier this year revealed that two-thirds of the 4,800 responses supported the extension.

It follows a similar consultation completed back in 2015 that also received considerable backing from the public.

Some key points raised in the consultation included that the new Bakerloo Line station at Elephant & Castle should be placed close to the existing Northern Line station to allow for more convenient changes to National Rail and other Tube services.

Proposed stations at New Cross Gate and Lewisham were also both supported by respondents, as they would provide good links with other transport including local buses, Overground, DLR and National Rail services.

However, there were some concerns voiced about the location of a ventilation shaft between New Cross Gate and Lewisham due to how the construction could negatively impact residents, businesses and traffic.

“I’m delighted that so many people have given their views on this vital project,” said Val Shawcross, deputy mayor for Transport. “The Bakerloo Line extension will improve life for thousands of Londoners, providing a new direct route into the heart of central London, and creating thousands of new homes and jobs.

“This is an important next step in delivering the project, and every response to the consultation will now be carefully considered,” she added. “We want to ensure that important issues like plans for the proposed new stations are the very best they can be, providing maximum benefits for local people.”

And Alex Williams, TfL’s director of City Planning, said: “The Bakerloo Line extension is vital to support the redevelopment of south east London, helping to deliver over 25,000 new homes and 5,000 new jobs. 

“We will consider the results of this consultation and use them to help us shape our plans for the extension which should be delivered by 2028-29.”

Today’s news also follows TfL confirming that the extension works were “firmly on track” for a 2030 opening, with construction for the project due to begin in 2024.

I think the Second Phase of the Bakerloo Line extension will go from Lewisham to Hayes taking over the Hayes Line. As Phase One will be given the go ahead and 2 new stations on the Old Kent Road area to be built at various locations that the 2 new stations will be built as part of the Bakerloo Line extension. But the Bakerloo Line to Bromley North could be planned. What about the Victoria Line. Could the Victoria Line be given the go ahead to extend from Brixton to New Cross & New Cross Gate via Dulwich. Or the Victoria Line extended to West Croydon and/or East Croydon via Camberwell and from Walthamstow Central to South Woodford or Woodford where it will terminate at and to interchange with the Central Line.

@Andrew Gwilt - The main reason why the Bakerloo line is beng extended is that it has spare capacity on it, particularly after the trains are replaced in the late-2020s. It makes sense to extend it to make use of that spare capacity. Once extended to Lewisham, that spare capacity is used up and the trains will be full in the central section, so there is little point in extending again if people are unable to use the trains in the central section because they are already full. Therefore, the Bakerloo is unlikely to be further extended. Similarly, the Victoria is already full in the central section and so is unlikely to be extended further. The Bakerloo is the only line currently with space capacity, hence this project. This is also why the Northern line extension to Battersea isn't going to Clapham Junction - it would just overload the central section of the line. Rather than extending existing lines, the way forward is to build new ones, such as Crossrail.

So responders welcomed the new services but not the construction works that are necessary to bring them about. In other news, responses suggest having cake and eating it is the preferred option.

@Noam: I suspect it's a very skewed sample. Folks who want to use the service will respond to the consultation saying they're in favour, those who will be inconvenienced by the construction but don't want to use it will be against, very few others will be motivated to respond.

I agree with Andrew. An extended Victoria Line to Herne Hill on a loop plus an extension to Woodford are required but the eastern end must be above ground as far as possible to limit construction time and cost. The heaviest development centres around Tottenham Hale , Spurs Football Ground , Walthamstow Academy and Walthamstow Dogs. This could be achieved on the Surface with Cut and Cover and small sections of Tunnels , if done sensitively. The ribbon is small. Stations :- Northumberland Park ( North Eastern extremity of Depot Higham Hill Road ( junction Billet Road Crooked Billet ( Sainsbury Car Park) Highams Park ( Tesco Car Park) Woodford Station A train every 75 seconds in the peak would mean 48 trains an hour. 32 to Walthamstow Central, 16 to Woodford. It would require state of the art junctions at Seven Susters similar to Crossrail 1.

I estimate journey times of 32 mins Walthamstow Central to Brixton and 46 mins Woodford to Herne Hill and back around on a loop.

Interested in these extension proposals. Yes extend to Lewisham but not beyond. A second route could use the previous plan to Camberwell, then Peckham Rye, link via Brockley/Crofton Park to Rushey Green & Catford. Have had to get to those parts, existing leaves much to be desired. ALSO Bakerloo should be restored from Harrow back up to Watford. The Bakerloo with its heavy-duty 72 stock far better than the cheapo rubbish on the Central line.

Jimbo, I take yout point on a line like the Northern and even the Bakerloo but surely it's just a matter of signalling . More trains means less waiting on platforms and smoother access and egress. Victoria Line has a train every 100 seconds, what's the technical limit 60 seconds, my plan has 75 seconds. The real answer is a more flexible economy, 9-5 creates unecessary peaks.

@Geoff, it's not just signalling, it's also how long the doors are open, including whether you can get them shut promptly. Certainly that's quicker per train if you have more trains for the same number of passengers, so fewer passengers per train. But there comes a point where overcrowding means doors don't shut promptly, which reduces capacity, so it's even more overcrowded, and ...

It's a travesty that certain people promise the World to get votes in the north. I'm with you on that. HS2 is a waste of money, better links in the north, changes on the Rugby Aylesbury line and an enlarged Marylebone Station, would have solved many of the problems at a lower cost. London will add a million people soon and many lines are at capacity but the revenue they generate justifies the expenditure. Has some genius done an Algorithm on the minimum stop time? The Victoria Line Extension I propose also helps South Londoners with a connection to Thameslink at Herne Hill. Everything takes too long, local developers should be charged per plot for the infrastructure, interests rates are low borrow and invest, the thinking is more Basil Brush than Bazelgette.

Extending the Bakerloo line as proposed is essential. Better integration and use of existing facilities preferable to building new ones WITHIN CAPACITY constraints. I'm disappointed that there does not appear to have been any discussion about extending the Metropolitan line to Tower gateway (which should be underground), Bermondsey, Old Kent rd...
