First images of major ‘gateway’ development at Dundee station unveiled

The first phases of redevelopment work at Dundee station were completed this week as part of a wider £1m refurbishment.

ScotRail Alliance is responsible for the changes, which have seen an update of the concourse, as well as new floors, ceilings, lighting and doors.

Local councillors say the work will create a “gateway to the region,” which has also seen a waterfront regeneration scheme to improve the area around the station.

In addition to general upgrades throughout the station, there have been replacements to the previous waiting room which is now a ‘ScotRail lounge’ with updated furnishings.

Ian McConnell, the ScotRail Alliance’s programmes and transformation director, said the upgrades were part of the organisation’s plan to build the “best railway Scotland’s ever had.”

Scotland’s transport minister, Humza Yousaf, added: “Creating welcoming, efficient stations for passengers is key to making destinations more attractive and improving overall experiences.

“This Scottish Government investment in Dundee station is just one part of our efforts to build the best railway network Scotland has ever had. This project shapes a gateway to the city and is an excellent example of how the industry can work in partnership with public and private sector partners to deliver to wider regeneration goals.”

The ScotRail Alliance is responsible for the redevelopment of Dundee station on the platform level, with Dundee City Council constructing a brand-new station building at street level.

The new station includes a ticket office and hotel, as well as new lifts and escalators down to the platform level. The project is due to be completed in late spring this year, ahead of the opening of the V&A Design Museum in September.

“The newly redeveloped railway station and concourse in Dundee acts as a gateway to the region via the waterfront regeneration project and this next piece of the jigsaw provides for people arriving in the city by train,” commented Lynne Short, convener of Dundee City Council's city development committee.

“The new facilities will welcome travellers and set the tone for their experience of Dundee and I am delighted that this stage is completed.”

Dundee Waterfront is a £1bn regeneration project along 8km of the River Tay, split into five distinct zones and including the construction of a whole new station.
