Wi-fi plans for major Scottish route
It is hoped that passengers travelling on certain rail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow will soon have access to free Wi-fi following Scotrail’s announcement that the system could be run on the current mobile phone network along the route.
Scottish ministers are expected to approve plans for this to go ahead, meaning that some of the approximately seven million passengers who use the line will be able to go online whilst travelling on the train.
However an announcement on the project will not be made until the project has been fully evaluated to ensure that it provides good value for money, with a Transport Scotland spokesperson saying: “A report was received from First ScotRail on May 28, 2010, and this will now be studied with a view to procuring – if affordable – the product that best meets the needs of passengers and stakeholders, and secures the best deal for the Scottish Government.”
