IEP mock-up highlights modern rail design

RTM headed down to Warwick this week to look at – and sit inside – the mock-up of Hitachi Rail Europe’s new IEP interior train designs. 

After two years of concept and initial work, and following feedback from TOCs, passengers, drivers, the DfT and more, the designs – which are extremely high-spec, clean and slick – have nearly been given full approval. 

In the saloons, new slightly lower FAINSA-designed seats (making it easier for people to see if someone is occupying a seat), made with polyurethane foam, providing greater flexibility, have been introduced into the cabs; electronic seat lighting making it easy to see when a seat is available has also been installed; and gone are the old-fashioned curtains with new high-spec shutter designs introduced. 

RTM can also confirm that, yes, as well as looking modern, the seats are comfortable and spacious with generous leg room, even in standard class. 

Speaking to RTM at the mock-up in DCA’s industrial unit, Andy Rogers, Hitachi Rail Europe’s IEP manager, said: “The mock-up you see here is the output of our extensive design process and we are expecting sign-off with the DfT on these very soon.” 

A DfT spokesperson added that there are a few small changes still to be made, but full approval should be on its way soon. And, RTM has to say, Hitachi and its partners have done well on the design. East Coast and Great Western passengers have a lot to look forward to.
