£35m Crossrail station underway next week
Construction work on the new £35m Crossrail station at Custom House in east London is due to start next week.
The project is being undertaken by Laing O’Rourke, which will mostly manufacture parts in Sheffield. The parts will then be assembled on location to minimise disruption for residents.
The new station means the journey between Custom House and Bond Street will be approximately 10 minutes quicker. Passengers travelling to and from Heathrow can also expect to shave 35 minutes off their journey.
The station will include a new ticket hall, an interchange with the Docklands Light Railway and step-free access between the platforms and street level.
It will have a roof made from the transparent plastic material, EFTE, similar to the material that was used at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The station is expected to be finished in December 2015.
Hoardings will go up around the site next week ahead of the demolition of the old North London Line station. As a result, temporary traffic management measures will be in place while the hoardings are being installed.
Roger Robinson, Laing O’Rourke’s CEO Europe, said: “We’re immensely proud to commence delivery of the latest station for London’s most important strategic rail project, and we look forward to applying our innovative engineering techniques to support its construction.”
Jeff Clegg, Crossrail area director east said: “When Crossrail opens, up to 12 trains an hour will link Custom House with central London and beyond, improving access between the Royal Docks and London’s key employment areas as well as supporting wider regeneration.”
