Refurbishment work for Cobwall viaduct

A viaduct in Blackburn is set to be refurbished by Network Rail in a project worth around £350,000.

Cobwall viaduct will be upgraded during the next six weeks.

The work involves tightening tie bars and stitching, grouting, pointing and replacing the brickwork as necessary. Any vegetation will be removed from the viaduct and the plates and handrails will be painted.

Diversionary routes will be set up for road users as Beechwood Road will be closed for 24 hours from midday Saturday each weekend.

Ray Chan, Network Rail’s scheme project manager, said: “This is a key viaduct on the national rail network. It has stood the test of time for the last 172 years and the work we are doing will keep it going for at least another 20 years.”
